2 found guilty of 1993 murder of Jamaican in UK

A jury has found two white men guilty of murdering a black teenager in a brutal racist stabbing that shocked Britain almost two decades ago.

Gary Dobson, 36, and David Norris, 35, were convicted today of killing Stephen Lawrence as he waited for a bus in 1993. The pair will be sentenced Wednesday.

The case – which has seen multiple court cases but no convictions until now – led to strong criticism of London’s Metropolitan Police and resulted in an investigation that found that the force was ‘institutionally racist’. Continue

Jamaica 50 celebration launched in the UK

The United Kingdom (UK) leg of the global celebrations to mark Jamaica’s 50th year of Independence in 2012 was launched on Tuesday in the city of London.

The programme of activities in the UK will begin in January and continue throughout the year in major cities and towns, including London, Birmingham, Sheffield, Leeds and Reading.

The celebration activities involve concerts, fashion shows, sports events, conferences, lectures, dinners, balls and a cultural summer camp for youth. Read more

Jamaica’s Asafa Powell to race indoors in Birmingham next February

Asafa Powell, the former world 100 metres record holder, will race indoors for the first time in eight years as part of his preparations for next year’s London Olympics.

The 29-year-old’s programme will include a grand prix meeting on 18 February in Birmingham, the English city where the Jamaican team will be based in the lead-up to the Olympics in July and August. Continue

They said it couldn’t be done, but we did it, and every minute of it was unforgettable! I’m talking about “Jamaica Live”, A one-day, arts, music and food festival which ran in Victoria Square this July. Celebrating a year to go before Birmingham opens her doors to the Jamaican – and American – Olympic teams.

So for one day only, the centre of the city became Birmingham’s Caribbean Quarter – with over 30,000 temporary residents. (Note to Cllr Whitby – please include this new Quarter in future editions of the “Big City Plan”)

You see, food wise, Birmingham won’t be another Beijing, where Usain Bolt and his mates had to race across to McDonald’s because there was nothing for them in the Olympic Village.

Birmingham has dozens of authentic and delicious places to pick up fresh Islands cuisine – including Deep Caribbean, Dutch Pot and Mish Mash.

And many of them came up to the city centre for “Jamaica Live”, as did legendary soul food icon Levi Roots, chefing away up on the Big Screen with some fresh chicken we got him from the markets. Read more

Jamaican athletes on Campus ahead of their 2012 visit

One of the world’s fastest men, Asafa Powell, current 4 x 100 world record holders, Nester Carter and Michael Frater, and Olympic Silver Medalist Shericka Williams warmed up on the University of Birmingham’s athletics track ahead of the Diamond League (Aviva Grand Prix) Athletics which took place at the Alexander Stadium on Sunday 10 July.

The University will host the Jamaican team for its pre-Games camp next July ahead of the London Olympics. The Jamaican team management has already visited the University campus several times, and regards the venue as potentially the best camp the Jamaicans will have experienced.

The visit on Saturday by some of Jamaica’s top Olympic medal prospects allowed the squad to endorse the University’s facilities, test out the track as well as meet and speak to sports scholars and staff.

Zena Wooldridge, Director of Sport at the University of Birmingham said: ‘There’s obviously lots of excitement amongst our university students and staff about the Jamaican team staying on campus ahead of London, and we are delighted that some of Jamaica’s top athletes are visiting us, with a year to go, to see for themselves their training and living environment for next July.’

The Association is a representative group of Jamaicans whose aims and objectives are to enhance, promote and serve the Jamaican community throughout the U.K. Since its inception in 1990, it has acted as enabler and facilitator to its members by creating direct and indirect contact with government and non governmental departments, both at home and abroad. It is a representative body for residents and returning residents alike.
